Cafe Freak カフェが好き…

Here's Sora sitting out side of a cafe called Stir near the boat harbour.  She's visited several cafes since her cafe debut.  We found most cafes are dog friendly and sometimes they offer Sora a bowl of water.  カフェ好きのオーナーのため、ソラは、よくカフェの外のテーブルで、大人しく（…なかなかできない？）待ってなければなりません。　そんな時、優しいカフェのお姉さんとかが、”お水飲む？”って大きなボールを差し出してくれることがあります。　Ｅｒｕｐｔｉｏｎ　Ｃａｆｅ　とか　Ｆｉｎｅ　Ｆｅｔｔｌｅとかは、優しいお姉さんのいるカフェのいくつか。　Ｚｅｓｔ　のようにドアの外に水の入ったボールが置いてあって、道行く犬にフリーの水を提供してるとこもあります。

Update on Sora's condition.... 近況報告

Its now about a month since Sora's unusual walking was diagnosed as problems with her spine and hips. We are happy to say that her condition hasn't got any worse since then. She has been exercising regularly and is having no particular problems with her walking or balance. We are probably still a bit over-protective of her but are trying to treat her like any other puppy. Keep it up Sora!　速いもので、あれから、もう1ヶ月近くが経ちました。ソラの状態が、想い過ごしではなく、思っていた以上に深刻（簡単に治療できるものではない）だということを知って、落胆した日々。　状況は変わらないけど、悪くはなっていないことをラッキーだと受け止めて、明るくやっていかなきゃ（明るくやっていますが）いけないなぁと、改めて思います。　ソラは、すくすく成長中。　お腹を上にころころしてる姿とか、スースーと大きな寝息をたてて眠ってるとことか見ると、ソラは、ハッピィなのだなぁと思えます。　前足をひきずるために、短くなってしまっていた真ん中の2本の指の爪も、少しではありますが長くなってきました。

At the boat harbour.... 冬はさらなるバードウオッチング

The other day Sora went to the boat harbour for a walk. She was very interested in the ducks swimming by. You can see she is wearing her harness that attaches to the seat belt in the car.　ソラは、相変わらず、鳥に興味があるよう。　小さくは雀から、黒鳥まで。　ナショナルラジオの朝早い時間帯の”鳥の鳴き声の録音”にも敏感に反応。
 

Winter is here....ああ、洗濯物…

With winter comes the problem of drying laundry. We don't have a drier so often hang cloths inside. The only problem is that Sora thinks its a lot of fun to pull at various things. To be honest she has improved very quickly and hasn't really caused any damage.　冬は、外干しだけでは、洗濯物が乾かなくて、クローズホースにかけて暖房で乾かすのが効率的なのだけど…この冬は、子犬の存在が！？　今のとこ、ソラの興味は、どちらかというと洗濯バサミのほうにあるよう。　Ｓの雨に濡れたサイクリングクローズは、くんくんしてたけどね。（臭かったかなぁ？）

A qualified puppy!... 卒業おめでとう？

Sora's certificate arrived for the puppy pre-school she completed a month ago. Cute labrador, but not as cute as Sora!　主に、他の子犬達と遊ぶのが目的だったけど、ソラはどっちかというと、大きいからだとは、うらはらに奥手。遊びの輪を外からみていて、やっと入れてもらえる感じでした。手のひらにのるような、おもちゃサイズのＴｗｅｅｄに逆に吠えられたりして、笑われてたり。　ソラのクラスメート：　Ｍｉｃｋ　（Ｍ；コッカスパニエルＸ？5ヶ月）　Ｋｅａ（Ｆ；ラブドールＸハンタウエイ１２ｗｋｓ）　Ｂｅｌｌａ（Ｆ；？）　Ｔｗｅｅｄ（Ｆ；？１０ｗｋｓ）　Ｋｅａは、まだまだ小さかったけど、アクティブでちょっとボッシィで、いつも遊びの輪をひきいていた感じ。　ソラは、スクールを機に、他の犬を見ると、”遊ぼうよ！！！”感が増してしまったよう（吠える）なのが誤算でした。

Mischief.... 悪戯は子犬の特権

Sora sometimes gets up to mischief, as you would expect from a puppy. Today she was chewing the watering can in the garden. Do you stop her or let her carry on while you take a photo? In this case the photographer won, as you can see. Sora's walking condition is pretty much unchanged, as far as we can tell. We are trying to give her good exercise and plenty of mental stimulation, but know we have to be a little careful where we take her and what we do with her. She's happy so that is the main thing.　　そう、悪戯をどこまで許すか？が迷うところです。　本人にとっては、もっとも楽しいアクティビティのひとつ…”私も参加させて””何何々！！”の時が多いのかもしれないけど、ただ、全くの純真無垢ではなく、悪いことだとわかってやってる時もあるみたいです。…あー、それにしても、Ｓのチョイスした写真は、可愛くない…まったくの悪者顔のソラ。　

Sora - gravel in Finnish ソラの意味は？

The other day we met a guy from Finland cycling from Bluff to Cape Rienga on a recumbent cycle to raise money for people with spinal injuries. He took a photo of Sora and said that in Finnish Sora means gravel!　フィンランド語では、”舗装してない道”だそうです。　ニュージーランドには、地図に載っている道でも、まだまだ砂利道がいっぱい。　ごろごろ小石がいっぱいで、ゆっくり走らなければならないし、他の車の後を追う形で走ると、砂埃がまきおこるしで、敬遠したくなるような時もあるけど、その果てには、美しい風景が待ってることも多い。　脊髄損傷で、不自由な身体でも、仰向きの姿勢でこげる特別仕様の自転車で、南から北へ旅しているフィンランド人の彼は、どこか鷹揚な感じで自然体。　ソラも脊髄系に問題があると言ったら、何かの縁？と写真を撮ってくれました。　…今のソラは、Ｇｒａｖｅｌ　ｒｏａｄをよろよろと走っているのかもしれない。　砂埃の中、先が見えないけれど、慎重に、ゆっくり、確かに走って行けば、”明るい”何かが待っているといいね。

Graduation...look at you! 卒業

Sora's just started wearing a new collar, actually it's for adult dogs.  She's also got a new registration tag, #105 now.　なんだか信じられません。　確かに、毎日見ていても成長しているのがわかるけど。　ブリーダーさんからもらってきた時、最初の首輪は一番細い穴に通してもぶかぶかでした。　ふと、気が付いたら、一番最後の穴でもきつきつ。

When tired and grumpy....とまらない、とめられない…

Yes, we know this makes Sora look a bit scary!! When she's getting tired (and therefore grumpy) and she's in the garden she often starts 'attacking' various plants. One of her 'favourites' is the miniature maple she is seen chewing here. When we try to  stop her she hides behind the maple and nearby shrubs and we can't get her out. She thinks it a great big joke!!　　眠くなると、むらむらと、してはいけないことをしてしまうのが子犬ｏｒソラ？　庭木の後ろでの追いかけっこはお手の物！　紅葉は葉を落として、無防備だし、つい最近、紅葉の下に植えられたスノードロップが芽を出しているのを発見…どうか、ソラが気付きませんように。　話は変わりますが、今年は、晩秋から冬にかけて比較的暖かかったせいか、椿も含めて、色んな花が、少し早めに咲き出しています。

Morning market... 土曜の朝市

This morning Sora visited the Saturday morning market. Its a real draw card for  dog owners as the organiser is dog-friendly.  Several people asked about her health as the shaved patch on her back was very obvious. She barked at a lot of dogs which wasn't good, but when she actually met them she was very friendly.　リバーサイドの朝市へのお出かけは、土曜の恒例行事になりつつあります。　主催者が犬好きなせいかどうか、他にも犬を連れてきている人たちがいっぱいで、犬の社交場？　ソラは襟巻きをしてお出かけ？首から肩にかけて白っぽい毛におおわれてます（今の所…また変わるかも？）。眉間にいつもしわがよってるせいか、大人顔？

Checking what's going by...通勤時間帯は…また、観察。

Sora likes to see who or what is going by the gate. Note the large shaved area on her back where she had her spinal test.　　この頃、ソラは夕方、通勤時間帯に通りを行く車や、バイク、人をじーっと門の所で一匹見つめてます。　そうこうしてるうちにＳが自転車で帰ってきたりして、双方嬉し。　脊髄液の検査をした時にそられた背中の毛は、元にもどるのにはもうちょっとかかりそうだけど、気にしない、気にしない。

More watching あきらめないで…

Sora is intrigued by many things and when she goes out she often sits staring intently at something. This afternoon while down at the harbour she spent some time staring at small birds which is one of the things she is particularly interested in at the moment.　　ソラは観察者。…今は、小鳥の観察？が彼女の中のブーム？　　少し離れて、静かに様子を見ながら好機をねらっている。　狩人目線なのかどうかは、疑問だけど、いつか鳥にさわれると思ってるよう。　あきらめちゃいけない、もしかしたら…？

People watching 子犬目線...

Sora went down to the lake for a short walk as the weather was nice. Afterwards she indulged in a bit of people watching.　ゆっくりと、このお天気を楽しみながらお散歩。　その後は、湖岸に近いベンチでお休み。　　ソラは、こういう時は、人間観察によだんがない。　女の子達の服装を見れば、どんなに暖かいか想像できるかと思う。　

Back to her old self this morning....今日は元気！

After being quite unwell yesterday Sora seems to be back to her old self this morning. She had a good breakfast and then spent time 'assisting' in the garden. After another period outside she had an enforced nap while the vacuum cleaner was used - too much barking! She's on two anti-inflammatory tablets a day so she'll continue with those and we'll she how she goes.　昨日は、とっても静かだったソラと我家も、今日は、ｈａｐｐｙな賑やかさに戻りました。こんなに一日で違うものなのか？あのソラの痛みはなんだったのだろうか？消炎剤が効いているのか？痛みの場所も、胸部なのか、肘から肩なのか？も定かではなかったけれど…”痛み”が戻りませんようにと祈るばかりです。　ソラは、やっと寝息を立て始めたので…私達も、彼女を起こさないように静かに過ごします。Sが焼いているレモンココナッツクッキーのこうばしいかおりがしてます。ちょっと遅いモーニングティーにでもしますか？

With a big pillow....枕が欲しかった…

With a big person's pillow Sora appears to be a little more comfortable.　なんだか横になるのを躊躇しているようなので、もしかしたら枕で少し身体を寄りかかる感じにしたらどうかなぁと思ったら、効果てきめん。枕の中身をかじらないソラというのは、やはり身体の調子がおかしい証拠。

Sora unwell.....元気がでない…

Unfortunately Sora has developed some pain in either one of her front legs, of maybe more likely in her ribcage area. It developed yesterday for no obvious reason. At its worst it caused her cry out in pain, and at other times its making her uncomfortable and stopping her sleeping. This morning she was no better so we took her to the vet. After a pain reducing injection we returned home and after some time she is finally sleeping, half in and half out of her bed! We are hoping to hear back from either the local vet or the specialist in Matamata. Whether this is in anyway related to her spinal problems is unknown at this stage. We are sitting at home worrying about her and wondering how much misfortune can befall one little puppy.　元気のないソラ、痛みに耐えているソラ、目から光が消えた子犬を見てるのはつらいです。彼女のほうがもっとつらいと思うし、この一週間、よく色んなことに小さな身体で耐えていると思います。この痛みが、ソラのしょっている神経系の異常と関係しているのかは不明。

Sora's back now...おかえりソラ！

Sora got back yesterday evening. It was great to have her home.

Unfortunately the results from her tests were not good. Her main problem is that she has an extra vertebrae in her back (just above her back hips). The vet thinks this is causing problems with the nerves that pass through that area which is leading to the unsteady walk and poor balance. She also has a certain amount of hip dysplacia which may also be affecting the movement of her back legs. There is no treatment for the back-nerve problem and we don't know how Sora's condition is going to progress. It could deteriorate, remain the same, or possibly even improve as she stops growing - only time will tell. Despite the tests we have no explanation for her scuffing her front paws when she walks.

Obviously we are quite upset by this news but we are doing our best to give her all that a small puppy would expect. She doesn't appear to be in pain so that is a blessing.　　ソラの好きな遊びは、”ひっぱりっこ”　本当は、あまり犬に勝たせてはいけないらしいけど…ぱっと、こちらのもっている先を離すと、彼女の方からまた近づいてきて、ひっぱりっこの繰り返し。こうして遊んでいる時は、ソラがこんなに色んな身体の問題を背負って生まれてきたとは思えません。　専門獣医さんの診断では、ソラは脊髄の腰に近い部分の骨がひとつ余計にあり、そのせいで、後ろ足の動きに関係する神経を圧迫しているのではないか？とのこと。また、老大型犬によくある、腰の関節の症状もすでにあるとのこと。前足をなぜひきづって歩くのかの原因は不明。　まだ、4ヶ月半の若さなのに…運動量も限っていかねばならないし、体重を痩せ型の方に保った方が腰にいいため、食事も少なめにしないといけないとのこと。…はっきりいって、全てが判明したわけではなく、将来のことは不透明な状況です。ソラのほかの兄弟姉妹には、今のところ問題はないらしく、なんでソラだけが！残念で悲しい。…でも、一番可哀相なのはソラなのだということを念じて、彼女が、障害にもめげずに、ｈａｐｐｙでいられるようにしてあげねばと二人で話してます。

Sora's been away at the vets in Matamata getting checked for her walking problems. Its been very quiet here.　ソラは今晩は専門獣医さんのクリニックで検査後のお泊り。　なんだか、存在の大きさを改めて感じます。
